The Healing Garden @ Far Rock Farm is the latest addition to our Urban Agriculture initiative. Leased through the Parks Department, we have turned an empty and forgotten piece of city land in the Far Rockaway section of Queens into an urban farm where we grow produce to bring healthy, local food to area institutions and citizens and train others to do the same.
The Healing Garden is a model farm that unites agriculture with community development, nutrition, and local economic development. The goal of our program is not simply to beautify the space with greenery; but rather use local agriculture to encourage healthy food choices, promote good health, spur economic growth through entrepreneurship and promote a strong sense of community.
The Merck Family Fund and National Grid Foundation are generous supporters of this project. Through their support we have been able to employ 15 local at-risk youth to participate in cross-generational learning, teaching and managing of the farm. Additionally, we have the opportunity to provide produce to Addabbo Family Health Center for sufferers of diabetes and high blood pressure.
