Last week at Health 360, we learned about the health benefits of drinking tea from Sharon, who runs the Brooklyn-based tea company Kaye Tea (https://www.facebook.com/Kayetea.ny). Sharon told us about how she has been a tea drinker and enthusiast from a young age, and how she finally turned her passion into a successful local business. So inspiring, not to mention delicious!
Sharon taught us that consumption of tea is being studied for numerous health benefits:
- Enhancing immune function
- Lowering LDL cholesterol levels
- Increasing HDL cholesterol levels
- Reducing blood pressure
- Thinning the blood, reducing the risk of a heart attack
- Lowering the risk of stroke
- Reducing the risk of cancer
- Boosting longevity
- Aiding digestion
- Preventing dental cavities and gingivitis
As the weather gets warmer, iced tea is a great alternative to soda and other sweetened beverages. However, keep an eye out, because many store-bought iced teas also contain lots of added sugar. Luckily, you can easily make your own iced tea at home! Steep 8 tea bags in four cups of boiling water for 3-5 minutes, then add four more cups of cold water and refrigerate. Sweeten it to taste with honey or 100% fruit juice for a very healthy and refreshing summer beverage!
